ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN

The barns at Old Hay are superb examples of traditional working farm buildings and are in fine condition, steeped in history located in a quite striking and truly beautiful part of north Cornwall . The buildings are Grade II listed and sit aside the impressive and also Grade II listed farmhouse.

The scheme put together focused around the conversion of these superb buildings and change of use to residential dwellings. These are invasive works and as such the scheme needed to demonstrate that such works could be carried out entirely sympathetically to the fabric of the building. The designs centred around utilising all existing openings, with minimal disturbance to the stone rubble walls, punching a range of new openings was avoided.

The historic and striking roof structure is to be retained with the first floor spaces arranged as living accommodation to capture the impressive scale of height within these areas of the buildings. All existing A frame trusses are retained and ‘on show’ as a homage to the buildings utilitarian nature.
